“Fairytales continue to dominate family entertainment in books and other media.” So says author and mythographer Marina Warner, who recently released a book about them called, Once Upon a Time: A Short History of Fairy Tale. She’s got an article in The Guardian today listing what she believes are The top 10 fairytales and exploring the way we perceive them, the messages they send to readers, and their enduring legacy.

Warner’s list includes works by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, along with contemporary novelists Angela Carter and Salman Rushdie. While it doesn’t include my personal favorite, Hansel and Gretel, it’s sure to inspire readers to revisit this classic form of short fiction.
