A new online community for readers and writers launches today with the hope of improving upon the current publishing model. Storyboard Cafe, based in Chicago, encourages aspiring writers to post excerpts of their work in order to get feedback and build a following of future fans. For readers, it represents a source of new content: find an author whose style you like, and you can pay a small monthly fee to access everything that writer posts. Storyboard Cafe also intends to help its writers find a publisher through networking.
The first iteration of the site will open to the public tonight. Additional features are on the way, including book trailers and a crowdsourced marketplace where writers can connect with photographers to acquire cover art.
